Samsung is world’s biggest advertising spender

Samsung spent US$4.2 billion on advertising last year, the most among global firms ranked by market researcher Asymco. The amount was more than the $3.3 billion spent by Coca-Cola, which has seldom lost its No. 1 spot in terms of marketing costs. Samsung’s arch rival Apple spent $1 billion.

Samsung used to focus on electronics parts such as semiconductors and LCD components, but it has been putting more money and energy into consumer products since it dominated the global TV market in 2006.

Last year, the tech giant claimed leading share in the global smartphone and refrigerator markets, and of its total operating profits in the first quarter of this year, 70 percent came from consumer products.
